Ethiopia Chelichele Natural Process
A coffee with exceptional flavour and a genuinely positive impact
Chelichele coffee comes from the highlands of Gedeb in southern Ethiopia, a region shaped by three distinct seasons that naturally support slow, even coffee development. The long dry months allow careful harvesting and processing, while the rainy seasons nurture the cherries from flowering to full ripeness. By November, the region bursts into its annual harvest — a rhythm that has defined Ethiopian coffee for generations.
What Makes This Coffee Special
This lot is produced at the Chelichele site, owned by Tamiru Amare, and sourced from smallholder farmers whose plots average just half a hectare. The cherries are floated to remove defects, dried on raised beds for 12–15 days, and hand‑sorted by local women to ensure exceptional quality. Once processed, the coffee travels to Addis Ababa and then to Djibouti for export — a journey handled with care at every stage.
Ethical Impact You Can Taste
Chelichele coffee is supplied through Ephtah Specialty Coffee, a company deeply committed to ethical, sustainable supply chains. Their approach includes:
- Pre‑financing up to 85% of the harvest, giving farmers financial security and freedom to focus on quality.
- Empowering women, who play a central role in sorting, farming, and decision‑making through initiatives like the Ama Commitment scheme.
- Fair and timely payments, with farmers receiving an initial payment as soon as their coffee arrives at the site.
- Community investment, including a new daycare centre for farmers’ children and plans for water infrastructure and expanded drying capacity.
- Local economic support, with land set aside for farmers to grow additional crops for market income.
